THE HISTORY OF URARTU FC

Urartu Football Club was founded on 20 January 1992, representing the region of Kotayk. The club, that originally was named Banants FC, was named after the native village of the founder Sargis Israelyan. In the very first season Urartu FC won the Armenian Cup and took the 3rd place in the championship.

 

Since 1995, Urartu FC didn't take part in the championship of Armenia, but was revived in April 2001.

 

In 2005 Urartu FC acquired its own base. The republican football sport base named after Eduard Grigorian, with all its territory and football fields, was passed to Urartu FC.

 

In 2007, Urartu FC for the second time in its history won the Armenian Cup, winning the final match against FC Ararat, 3-1.

 

Urartu FC won the first title of champion of Armenia in 2013/14 season, earning 50 points in 28 rounds and being ahead of its rivals by 3 points.

 

In its history Urartu FC won the Super Cup named after Hakob Tonoyan only one time, it was in the season 2014/15 in the match against FC Pyunik (3-0).

 

In the season 2015/16 Urartu FC became the winner of the Armenian Cup for the third time. The opponents was FC Mika and the final score was 2-0.

 

In August 2019, the club underwent reforms and changed its entire appearance, from the name to the logo and the color of the uniform. The previously known name Banants FC went down in history, and the club continued its activities under the name Urartu FC.

 

The season 2022/23 was the most successful for the club. In that season Urartu FC became the winner of the so-called Golden Double, winning both Armenian Premier League and Armenian Cup.

 

Urartu FC represents Armenia in the European competitions and has a lot of players in the national teams of Armenia.

 

A little statistic:

  • The player with the most appearances for the club is Aram Bareghamyan (211 matches);
  • The top scorer is Aram Hakobyan (62 goals);
  • Record performance in a single season holds Ara Hakobyan (45 goals in 2003).
